Many days it's hard to be human. The weight of so much responsibility. The need to be so many things to so many people. Mom, teacher, friend, wife, sister, daughter. Having to live in a society torn to shreds and filled with hate. Many days, my heart aches and I wish I had my own super powers, but I don't have extra arms, lightning speed, or super human strength.
What I have is a simple black blazer and a killer playlist. I don't wear the black blazer often, but when I need to be a superhero, when I need some special strength to make it through, to do good, to be the best version of myself I can be for those I love. I pull out my superhero suit.
Everyone has one. That one outfit, piece of clothing, or jewelry that has some special power to transform you. You put it on and it reminds you of every path you've walked and every trial you have passed. A visual that you have survived every bad day so far and you're still standing here; that this world still needs you.
It had been a few months, but this week I needed my super hero suit. I walked into my classroom wearing my teal romper, black blazer, and some Adidas kicks for good measure. A student came up to me and asked, "Why are you wearing a suit jacket?" I smiled, surprised anybody had said anything, it’s not like I had never worn it before. I looked at him and knew that today wasn't the day for a response like "I just like it." So I told him the truth, "because sometimes we all need to feel extra brave and my coat makes me feel brave." He nodded in approval.
We are only human, but to survive this world it feels like we need to be super human. The thing is, if you are here and standing, if you are waking up and giving it your all, if you are loving those around you hard, YOU ARE ALREADY BEING, A SUPER HUMAN. So you mine as well throw on the cape.
